Update on Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

On April 20, 2010, a fatal explosion occurred on an oil drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. There was a huge fire. The rig sank. Now an estimated 5,000 to 25,000 barrels of oil are spilling into the water daily. I watched the longest running TV program in the USA, Meet the Press. U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said it could be three months before a relief well is completed to address the Gulf oil spill. "You're looking at potentially 90 days before you ultimately get to what is the ultimate solution here and that's a relief well."

Anchor Megyn Kelly has a law degree. For Fox she has covered general assignments, legal issues, and the Supreme Court. Reporter Jonathan Serrie is a graduate of Emory University. Earlier in his career he reported at Atlanta's WSB-TV. For Fox, Serrie did reports from Europe and Asia, before concentrating on the southern USA.

Oil Spill: Watching Cautiously from Alabama

In the 21st century there are new and unique ways to learn the news. We have seen that the major news organizations (newspapers, magazines, radio, and TV) all have websites. New to these sights are blogs posted by the reporters. Often a blog is updated several times during a day. Below are two comments by Jonathan Serrie. Please read.

For your comment, give your opinion about environmental issues. What concerns you? What should be done about drilling for oil below the Gulf of Mexico? Do you feel this is a major news story? Why or why not?

  1. I am upset with that situation. This is the worst environmental accident that I have ever seen. It will be recorded in history forever. In addition, it is all human faults. It is so sad that all water life in the Gulf of Mexico and the land life have been affected so badly with this event. More sad is that some of these animals are already near extinction, and the oil slick can eradicate more of them. A huge number of people stop working because their work is directly related with the water life (fish, shrimp and others crustaceous) so their life is affected as well. For example, fishermen and restaurant owners are losing much money. I hope that BP will continue to be responsible for this entire event and can make the right thing to clean all this pollution.

  2.  Of course, I think this is a major new story! Similar thing happened in Korea few years ago, but it took forever to recover. This was the first time to see the satellite video of this oil spill. I was really shocked that even the satellite can catch the stream of spilled oil. This is major environmental issue. This will affect the ecosystem and food chain. Also, the coastal area will be covered with 20,000 barrels of oil. When an oil spill happened in Korea, beach areas were covered with oil. Because Korea is a small country and its small part was damaged, it took a few years to recover. However, the United States is vast, so it will take much longer time to recover from that damage. I am not an expert, thus I have no clue how to stop the oil spilling into the water. I hope the solution come out soon, so that we can save our ecosystem and Mother Earth!

  3. That’s pretty awful! When I saw the disaster that hurricane Katrina did, I thought that was one of the worst natural phenomena that has occurred in U.S history. Even though this oil spill, happening in The Gulf of Mexico now, is not natural because it was produced by human mistakes, the disaster is definitely worse than Katrina and again, people from Louisiana are affected for this. The experts say they don’t know how to clean it up. They wish to use a kind of vacuum cleaner and wipe it out in minutes. But that it is not going to happen. That’s very sad! I will pray for all of these people who are in charge for stop the spill and control the oil already in the ocean, can work quickly and drive the situation to the normal conditions. Does the Government punishment the companies involved with that? What kind of punishment will the Government give to them? We will see this close! God bless this country!

  4. What do the people call it? Oil spill? Are they talking about some spilt oil on the kitchen counter top while cooking? No. This oil exploitation off the Gulf Coast is just another story that has been already a long story since the rapid industrial development throughout the centuries, not a story from yesterday or few weeks ago. When you do something wrong, people call it a ‘mistake’, however, when you do it over and over again it’s not a mistake but a serious fault. Then why people repeat silly things like pouring huge money on unnecessary mess when they could have stopped it?
Are people really stupid to do this over and over again? No. If so, God would have not appointed them to be a commander of this whole world. They know better than that. The real issue is that they are blind because they only care making money out of the environmental sacrifices. They may not know what environmental calamity can result in life. Maybe they do not even know what that really means. First, each environmental catastrophe takes whole a lot of energy and time as well as unnecessary substantial loss. Second, it could be impossible to recover no matter how much they effort. Last but not least, they might be able to make money out of environment as their victim, they cannot do the opposite way. At the end, no matter how much money they pay, they cannot afford to take back or create the natural environment with their ability.
Therefore, everybody on the earth must keep in mind that the environment is not such thing that they can spare for their own or barter with something else anytime. It is rather very invaluable natural fortune of global community which means that it belongs to every single living creature on the earth. In conclusion, I can clearly see the necessity of the active environmental movement by both governmental organization and NGO at the same time to make the earth more sustainable for the promised future. Let me put it this way. Taking good care of our earth is vital to us as the health of a mother is to development of fetus.

  5. I think this an important topic to say about the Gulf of Mexico I think BP is responisible for that oil spiil and I thought its really bad for the Marine Environment, for Fish, Birds, and other Sea Creatures. This would effect the Marine Business for Fish Farmers, and Living Creatures. As BP says they are not Responsible fot this. Some other Third Party Company made a mistake, But as I Heard in the news, BP has said that they have spent millons of dollars on the gulf to fix the problem. I think they are going to fix them in a couple of weeks as they admmited. I hope every thing will be fair.

  6. This news is very sad. I know that it was an accident but I am very mad about that. I don't think that BP should be blamed for all that. I think they should pay for it, but this is all our fault. We are the ones that use that oil that has been spilling in the Gulf of Mexico. If we did not need the oil, BP wouold not be extracting it to sell.
There are more people involved in this accident besides British Petroleum (BP). The drilling rig belongs to a company called Transocean and its has been leased by BP and also the technical support for the instalation is made by a company named Halliburton. Instead of blaming each other, I think those companies should be doing more to protect the animals and the vegetation around. I've heard that groups of ONG has been helping. They have been collecting hair to help absorve the oil around the beach.
Human beings are probably the only live thing in this planet that polutes air, water and destroys the natural resources.
How long will it take for people to wake up and see that our planet is dying?

  7. When happens a natural tragedy like that, the news papers around the world put in their headlines words as " The major disaster in the world" etc., and they forget another tragedies, like the Tank Valdez at Alaska that spilled oil and killed many animal species and today the enviroment is affected because of this.

  8. Is alternative energy the solution to this problem? It could be, but I guess most of the people do not care about what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico. Since oil is one of the best businesses around the world, those kinds of things are going to keep happening. BP thinks that this issue can be solved only with money, which is a mistake. Therefore many species will die, and even with all the money of the world they will not recover the endangered wildlife. I hope that people understand what is happening and work together to help all of the animals that are being affected by this disaster.

  9. The United States encountered a lot of disasters during the 21st century. The oil spill is one of the major problems. Since the oil spill started a lot of people, businesses, and animals suffered from it. BP has suggested many solutions to the problem, but none was effective. The U.S. did not take early precautions, and never thought an oil spill was going to happen. People living near the coast are working on the problem by cleaning the oil spill. People felt bad about marine life, and helped them. This made me feel that the women was pretty nice because she helped sea creatures on her own.In conclusion, I have these questions: Why do people ask for money from the Federal government, not BP which is a private company? How come such a big company as BP would let this disaster happen? Will the temporary cap hold permanently? I hope that everything will be fixed soon.
