A Justice Resigns From the Supreme Court

Nine justices are seated on the bench of the Supreme Court. Once appointed, they have the job for life. It is not often that a justice retires. Thus this is a very big and important news story. The resignation of Justice Stevens, and especially the person selected to succeed him, will have much news coverage this spring and summer. This is an excellent opportunity for you to see how the three independent branches of American government – executive, legislative, and judicial – work together to keeps checks and balances in Washington.

  1. Since I have lived in the United States, I have known and understood many of the traditions and cultures of this great country and otherwise from the outside could not. Sign in these things I have found the justice branch of the government. Here justice gives all its majesty and importance. Judges here are free and have no intimidation of any kind. In the United Stetes, especially judges of the Supreme Court arrive at a post after that the country knows his resume. They do not serve for money, but to serve their country

  2. Stevens earned a reputation for quality work and for independence, because this he stayed for 34 years at the same position. I am pretty sure that he did a wonderful job. He seems to be a simple person, that knows what he was doing was the best for the country. No one knows who is going to be the best candidate who will be his successor. I hope the can chose the one that can be like Stevens and do a great job as him. Maybe this person will not be for 34 years but he/she can do their best.

  3. We are sorry that people like Justice John Paul Stevens has to resign from the Supreme Court, for this country needs people like him. After 35 years in the Supreme Court, and serving seven different presidents, Stevens was one of the most moderate justices in the court. His achievements prove that it will be difficult to fill this position with another justice like him. We expect that his successor can balance the court and can play the same or better role that he did. I heard that people in the White House were speculating about the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton could be the successor of Justice Stevens. So, if it is true, I think President Obama will make a good selection.

I didn;t know about the system.
After reading the news, I know that supreme court is independent branches. And I suprised that Justice John Paul Stevens has stayed for 34 years at the same position. And people like Justice John Paul Stevens.
I wish that my country has people like John Paul.

  5. I find these article captions quite misleading. Is Reuters just seeking to get a rise out of folks.
Obama has so far replaces one relatively liberal justice with another. He will most likely replace the liberal Stevens with another relatively liberal justice. These changes in individuals do not represent “reshaping” the court but merely maintaining the status quo.
Replacing a liberal with a conservative or vice versa would be “reshaping” or am I missing something?

  6. Justice John Paul Stevens will be missed by this nation. He is a very smart person and knows what is best for this country. His retirement will mark a new era on The Supreme Court. His job was one of the hardest in this country, he had to go thru so many important decisions and he helped to choose the best decisions ever.
This nation has benefited from his wisdom for the last 35 years when he was nominated by President Gerald Ford to replace William O. Douglas. Since then seven new presidents have been elected for this country. Our President Obama will need to decide sometime soon who is going to replace Justice Stevens. The person who will replace him needs to balance The Supreme Court and have political experience. Let's hope that Obama will choose a perfect person.

  7.  It is very interesting to watch how the US government works. Last year, the United State, was stirring about the presidential nomination for Sonia Soto mayor. Now, the resignation of Justice Stevens brought up that nomination issue again. I like how the US government system works; each branch is independent, but they actually depend on one another. Anyways, I feel sorry for Justice Stevens. It would be very sad to leave his 34-year-old job. He’d been with that job almost half of his life. I hope President Obama appoint right person who can succeed Justice Stevens` 34 years of achievements.
